—  About

Lucas Westcoat is a Seattle photographer & sketch artist.

Through the hazy viewfinder of my mother's weathered Minolta, I discovered magic in 2002. What began as a simple college project transformed into an awakening – suddenly the familiar paths of my campus revealed themselves anew, each frame capturing stories I'd walked past countless times but never truly seen.

That borrowed camera became my gateway into a world where light speaks and shadows whisper. In the decades since, I've chased those whispers across continents, perpetually experimenting with techniques that reach beyond mere documentation to touch something deeper – the raw emotion lurking beneath every scene, waiting to be unveiled.

My journey into drawing emerged more recently, but with an intensity born from years of quiet admiration. What started as reverent appreciation of others' pencil work has evolved into my own daily practice, with hundreds of sketches filling notebooks – each one a meditation in observation and patience.

Though my lens has captured wonders across the globe, nothing captivates me quite like the infinite complexity of the human face. In every portrait, whether photographed or drawn, I search for that fleeting moment when guards drop and truth emerges – the subtle lift of an eyebrow, a half-formed smile, the distant gaze that speaks volumes.

These arts are my escape from a world of ticking clocks and calendar alerts. Behind the camera or bent over a sketchbook, time dissolves. There is only the frame, the subject, and the space between – a sacred triangle where mundane moments transform into memory, emotion, and story. Welcome to my collection of such moments.
